Active sulfhydryl groups (SH) are mainly present in cysteine and serve as important functional groups for protein structure and certain redox reactions in organisms. In protein structures, disulfide bonds formed by dehydrogenation of two sulfhydryl groups link adjacent polypeptides, which is critical for maintaining the intact conformation of proteins.
